The Sensex at the Bombay Stock Exchange declined 78 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 58,927, in a range-bound trade today. The Nifty at the National Stock Exchange lost just 15 points to end at 17,547. In the broader market, outperforming the Sensex, the BSE Mid Cap index jumped 1.5 percent and the Small-cap index rose 1.2 percent.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee depreciated 25 paise to 73 rupees and 86 paise against the US dollar.
Among other global stock markets, Asian markets ended mixed today.
China’s Shanghai Composite index rose 0.4% after debt-laden developer China Evergrande said it would make some interest payments; Japan’s Nikkei-225 index dropped 0.7 percent. And Singapore’s Straits Times index dipped 0.5 percent. Stock markets in Hong Kong, and South Korea were closed an account of holiday today.
In Europe, London’s FTSE-100 had risen 1.3 percent; France’s CAC-40 had climbed 1.2 percent and Germany’s DAX had added 0.7 percent, in intra-day trade.
