Jammu and Kashmir receives fresh snowfall

In Jammu and Kashmir, the higher reaches of the Union Territory received fresh snowfall while heavy rains lashed plains today, bringing the temperatures further down. Our correspondent reports that the inclement weather conditions also resulted in closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) and Mughal Road, connecting twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch with the Kashmir Valley.

Worth to mention, several parts of Kashmir including the world famous ski-resort, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Shopian, Gurez and Zojila received fresh snowfall in the intervening night of Friday-Saturday and the heavy rainfall has also lashed J&K plains since last night. The MeT Department predicted more rains and snow till Sunday as the Western disturbance as per the forecast has affected J&K.   Meanwhile, the prevalent weather conditions have also forced the authorities to close the vital roads in the Union Territory as precautionary measures. The 270-kilometre long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been closed due to heavy rainfall at Cafeteria Morh, near Ramban, while higher reaches of Pirpanjal mountain range received heavy snowfall, resulting in the closure of historic Mughal Road, connecting the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch with the Kashmir Valley, while men and machinery have been pressed into service to clear the road. However, in view of heavy rainfall since early morning today, the people are advised to avoid any unnecessary travel on Jammu-Srinagar Highway and all other important intra-district roads in Ramban district.
